Inpatient Phlebotomy Supervisor at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana

Description

Responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all of the functions within the laboratory phlebotomy section including training, staffing, maintaining supplies, and communicating with the laboratory administration. Performs venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks to obtain blood samples for testing purposes as required. Evaluates employees using laboratory and hospital guidelines and policies to perform competency assessment. Encourages professional growth and development of staff. Coordinates on site training of Phlebotomy students and new hires. Performs other related functions as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor or Director.

  • • Always records phlebotomy collection information into the Laboratory Information System with accurate attention to name of patient, collection time , and receive time.
  • • Accurately and successfully performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks following phlebotomy policies and procedures.
  • • Coordinates the phlebotomy workload to ensure all collections are completed in a timely manner.
  • • Analyzes phlebotomy turnaround time data and seeks ways to improve turnaround time.
  • • Maintains phlebotomy carts and supply area in a clean orderly fashion.
  • • Effectively operates the Laboratory Information System for general laboratory and section specific functions.
  • • Completes competency assessments accurately and in a timely manner.
  • • Communicates all phlebotomy issues to the laboratory supervisor or director appropriately.
  • • Maintains inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy staffing at appropriate levels.
  • • Always follows laboratory requirements for use of personal protection equipment.
  • • Willingly helps co-workers to complete section duties.
  • • Accurately collects improvement performance data as directed.
  • • Actively participates in the development and implementation of process improvements by attending department meetings.
  • • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification Phlebotomy certification preferred
  • • AHA or ARC BLS required within 30 days of hire required
